Olivet Baptist Church is currently hiring for the part-time position of Youth Director.
Part-time: 10-15 hrs/week
Summary of position:
- The role of the youth director is to build relationships with Middle School and High School aged individuals in our community and to create a safe space for the youth to grow in their love and knowledge of Jesus, love for one another, and love for all people.
About Olivet Baptist Church:
- Olivet Baptist Church is a vibrant church in New Westminster, BC that strives to love God and people well. We have over 100 people worshipping together on a Sunday morning. Our worship gatherings are a mostly contemporary worship experience, while embracing the church calendar (ie: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Advent, etc) and integrating worship traditions in an effort to be intergenerational. We have experienced a good amount of growth over the last three years as more people are coming from the neighbourhood around Olivet. We have a growing number of kids and youth, with many youth coming from the local school down the road, Fraser River Middle School.
Responsibilities:
- Create and nurture a mid-week opportunity for connection and discipleship with youth (such as a night for youth events). This is a time to connect with youth outside of Sunday mornings, talk about faith and following Jesus, share contextual spiritual ideas/teachings from scripture and help youth find their part in God’s story.
- Run the Middle School Sunday school class (currently called Middle School Question Corner) on two Sundays a month during the sermon portion of the Sunday service. This is an opportunity for contextual study of scripture, prayer, sharing with one another, and to foster the community within the Middle School aged group.
- Build a volunteer team of leaders to help with youth events and Middle School Sunday school and to provide support and encouragement for the teens.
- Provide one-on-one mentoring, support, and encouragement for the youth in the community as they navigate their spiritual lives (whether personally or through the volunteer team).
- Encourage intergenerational connections within Olivet – Encourage youth to serve in the church in the areas of their gifts; model intergenerational connections and relationships; personally participate and encourage youth to participate in wider church events, connection opportunities, and Sunday morning gatherings; provide helpful feedback to the rest of the staff and pastoral team on ways we can be more mindful of youth in our church community.
- Build connections with the Middle Schools and Secondary School in New Westminster.
- Have a weekly check-in with the Lead Pastor.
Accountability:
- First and foremost, the Youth Director is accountable to God, secondly to the Lead Pastor, and then to the Council and membership of Olivet Baptist Church.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Must have a personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Be willing to uphold the Olivet Baptist Church’s mission statement and covenant and the CBWC Identity Statement
- Experience (whether volunteer or professionally) and a passion for youth (empathy for their struggles, excitement for youth knowing Jesus, understanding for the challenges they face, etc).
- Must have skills and gifts in youth discipleship (giving talks/Bible lessons, fostering connections with youth, etc).
- Ideal, but not necessary: an undergrad that pertains to ministry/youth ministry or currently in school for one
